Un-Doing Structures \u2013 in Theory&Practice<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In this workshop, the marks of academically set and university-political structures that implicitly produce exclusions are (historically) traced in order to find ways to further open up and carefully think about the meanings of 'decolonization' and universities and to initiate other (university) politics in conjunction with the production of \u2018knowledge\u2019.<\/p>

In the process, traces of these histories, that are still effective, like those related to anti-Semitism, are examined and looked at, with view to a different future \u2013 this can be done, for example, through discussing unacknowledged and \u2018notknown\u2019 (hir-)\u2019stories' and (con-)texts. It aims at focusing on the past, in order not to forget, and to acknowledge the pain and to discuss its possible traces and parallels to today's developments in more depth, including the question of how we want to understand 'critique' as \u2018thought\u2019. The question is also how 'knowledge' was and is represented, and that knowledge, also in Europe until today, is and remains strongly shaped by otherness and other, marginalized positions. A central, long-standing goal is also, and especially so in the German context, to prevent marginalized and racialized 'groups' from being discursively played off against each other.<\/p>

Instead, the aim is to strengthen alliances and other visions that have always been part of the theoretical and artistic reflections of decolonial and critical thinkers in Germany and all over the world.<\/p>

'Decolonization' is, a term that has recently gained renewed use in scholarly and non-scholarly debates, and that became vocal worldwide and especially in the countries of the global South at least since 2015, such as the Rhodes Must Fall movement and the critique of caste privilege in the education system in India;<\/p>

however, the term has now become a buzz word, and is in danger of losing its important meaning. To emphasize its interventionist, critical character, some scholars now also speak of anti-colonial approaches instead.<\/p>

Behind these debates are three interlocking considerations that are central to the further development of \u2018universities\u2019 as established knowledge-systems and glocal institutions of knowledge production. These are, first, that universities must confront the legacy of their colonial structures, also within their respective countries and contexts, which are part of their history, teaching, and research. BIPOC and \u2018minority\u2019 students, lecturers and researchers are 'traditionally' (historically driven), not least as a consequence of such conditions of neglect and thoughtlessness, relatively underrepresented in universities and other institutions of academic learning. Furthermore, it is important to work towards changing the curricula of the various disciplines in such a way that colonial, anti-Semitic and racist thought patterns and texts are not repeated in them, so that a productive practice of relearning can begin in teaching and research that takes into account as many ambivalences and aporias as possible, and yet is still able to show ways of thought in teaching and research that can act by taking into account other historical and contemporary models of knowledge formation and production \u2013 such as the interventions and theorizations of Jewish and Black thinkers, scholars, and intellectuals.<\/p>

The further, long-term attention of the workshop-Un-Doing-Structures in Theory & Practice, is thus also on the formation of alliances and coalitions, for example with other queer and feminist centers, which can work together, against the background of these considerations, also in the form of small working groups and can go towards change in the formations of theory & practice of \u2018knowledge\u2019 and its (institutional) production.<\/p>

The workshop Un-Doing-Structures in Theory & Practice addresses in particular graduate students, pre-docs, post-docs, post-doctoral researchers, and professors across disciplines who have already engaged with and\/or come into contact with these issues and who want to continue to do so within a larger framework that aims at change on a theoretical and practice-oriented level.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Un-Doing Structures \u2013 in Theory&Practice In dieser Werkstatt sollen den Spuren von akademisch gesetzten und (hochschul-)politischen Strukturen nachgegangen werden, die implizit Ausschl\u00fcsse produzieren, um Wege zur st\u00e4rkeren \u00d6ffnung und \u201aDekolonisierung\u2018 von Universit\u00e4ten zu entwerfen und (hochschul-)politisch in Gang zu bringen. Dabei sollen auch vergangene, teilweise immer noch wirksame, etwa antisemitisch gepr\u00e4gte Z\u00fcge dieser Historien in den Blick genommen und in Hinblick auf eine andere Zukunft, zum Beispiel durch, nicht weiter bekannte \u201aGeschichten\u2018 und (Kon-)Texte diskutiert werden. Ziel ist es, Vergangenes auch zu fokussieren, aufzuarbeiten aber nicht vergessen zu machen, sondern das Leid(en) zun\u00e4chst anzuerkennen, und ihre m\u00f6glichen Parallelen zu heutigen Entwicklungen tiefer gehend zu er\u00f6rtern, so auch die Frage, wie wir \u201aKritik\u2018 als \u201aDenken\u2018 verstehen wollen. Die Frage ist dabei auch wie \u201aWissen\u2018 und Wissensentwicklung repr\u00e4sentiert wurde und wird, und dass Wissen, auch in Europa, von Andersheit und anderen, marginalisierten Positionen, bis heute, stark gepr\u00e4gt ist und bleibt. Ein zentrales, langwieriges Ziel ist es auch, nachgerade im deutschen Raum, zu verhindern, dass marginalsierte und rassisierte \u201aGruppen\u2018 diskursiv gegeneinander ausgespielt werden. Stattdessen geht es um die St\u00e4rkung von B\u00fcndnissen und anderen Visionierungen, die schon immer Teil theoretischer und k\u00fcnstlerischer \u00dcberlegungen dekolonialer und rassismuskritischer Denker*innen in Deutschland und \u00fcberall auf der Welt gewesen sind. \u201aDekolonisierung\u2018 ist zun\u00e4chst ein Begriff der in j\u00fcngster Zeit aus wissenschaftlichen Debatten, die sp\u00e4testens 2015 weltweit und insbesondere in den L\u00e4ndern des globalen S\u00fcdens, etwa der Rhodes Must Fall Bewegung und der Kritik an der Kastenpriviligierung im Bildungssystem in Indien, laut geworden ist, wieder verst\u00e4rkt Verwendung findet; der Begriff ist aber nun zum Buzz-Wort avanciert, und droht seine wichtige Bedeutung zu verlieren. Um die kritischen \u00dcberlegungen zu betonen, die dahinterstehen, sprechen einige Wissenschaftler*innen inzwischen auch von anti-kolonialen Ans\u00e4tzen bei der Reformierung des Forschens und Lehrens. Dahinter stehen drei ineinandergreifende \u00dcberlegungen, die f\u00fcr die Weiterentwicklung der Universit\u00e4ten, als glokal agierende Institutionen der Wissensproduktion von zentraler Bedeutung sind. Diese sind zum einen, dass die Universit\u00e4ten sich mit dem Verm\u00e4chtnis ihrer kolonialen Strukturen, auch innerhalb der jeweiligen L\u00e4nder und Kontexte, auseinandersetzen m\u00fcssen, die, Teil ihrer Geschichte, Lehre und Forschung sind. BIPOC Studierende und vor allem Lehrende und Forschende sind \u201atraditionell\u2018 (historisch gepr\u00e4gt), zum anderen, und nicht zuletzt als Folge dieser Vernachl\u00e4ssigungen und Verh\u00e4ltnisse, in den europ\u00e4ischen und deutschen Universit\u00e4ten relativ unterrepr\u00e4sentiert. Zum weiteren, geht es darum darauf hinzuwirken, dass sich die Curricula der verschiedenen Disziplinen auf eine Weise \u00e4ndern, dass sich in ihnen koloniale, antisemitisch gepr\u00e4gte und rassistische Denkmuster und Texte nicht wiederholen, so dass eine produktive Praxis des Umlernens in Lehre und Forschung einsetzen kann, die m\u00f6glichst alle Ambivalenzen und Aporien mitbedenkt und dennoch handlungsf\u00e4hige Wege des Denkens in Lehre und Forschung aufweisen kann, und die dabei auch historische und gegenw\u00e4rtige Vorlagen mitber\u00fccksichtigt (etwa die Interventionen und Theoretisierungen j\u00fcdischer und Schwarzer Denker*innen, Wissenschaftler*innen und Intellektuelle). Das weitere, langfristige Augenmerk der Werkstatt-Un-Doing-Structures in Theory & Practice, liegt so auch auf die Bildung von Allianzen und Koalitionen, etwa mit anderen, queeren und feministischen Zentren und Forschungsbereichen, die zusammen, vor dem Hintergrund dieser \u00dcberlegungen, auch in Form von kleinen Arbeitsgruppen agieren und auf Ver\u00c4nderung institutioneller Art, hinwirken k\u00f6nnen.
